A Pre-Surgical "Tune-Up"
Cardiac Infusion Therapy Strengthens Patient Prior to High-Risk Surgery

Ventilator Weaning - Genesis Launches Pilot Program

Genesis Launches Alert to Bring Rapid Care for Heart Attacks
Genesis Medical Center has launched a heart attack alert that mobilizes paramedics and a broad spectrum of hospital staff to respond to a heart attack victim.  The goal: to open up the heart's cogged arteries in a cardiac catheterization lab within 90 minutes of the patient's arrival to the Emergency Department.  Continued  (Posted 6/29/04) 

Research:  Full-Service Facility Best for NSTEMI Patients

, gave two presentations - "The Case for Early Diagnosis and Treatment of Lung Cancer" and "Aortic Dissection: Missed Diagnosis Ctastrophe" on May 22 at the Cancer and Cardiology Conference of the Iowa Academy of Family Physicians in Council Bluffs, Iowa. 

Heart Recruitment DVD Wins National Health Care Marketing Awards 
The Genesis Heart Recruitment DVD won the Gold award in the professional recruitment category.  This DVD is given to health care professionals who are interested in becoming part of the Genesis Heart Team.  The Team strives to find individuals with "the compassion, the knowledge and the dedication necessary to care for people with heart disease."

Genesis First in Iowa to Use New Device to Stop Severe Leg Pain

For most people, a trip to the mailbox is an everyday activity.  But for people with clogged leg arteries, it can be a painful ordeal.  Recently, Genesis Medical Center became the first hospital in Iowa to use a device that clears clogged leg arteries, and in turn, clears the way for people with severe leg pain to enjoy walking again.  (Posted 2/24/04)  

Amiodarone:  Be Careful When Doing The Right Thing

Antiarrhythmic therapy for the treatment of atrial and ventricular ectopy and sustained arrhythmias was historically the domain of all physicians.  Family practitioners, internists, cardiologists, and electrophysiologists all routinely participated in the prescribing and dispensing of these agents.  However, the Cardiac Arrhythmia Suppression Trials (CAST) in the early 1990's demonstrated that Class IC drugs were potentially harmful when used in the wrong patient population.  Today more is known about antiarrhythmic medications.  The antiarrhythmic drug Amiodarone HCL, has had an increase in sales and prescribing in the recent years.  This increase usage demands selective physician prescribing and prudent patient follow-up. First Time Support for Left Ventricular Assist Patient
Genesis Medical Center Cardiac Rehabilitation staff and local EMT's completed specialized training last month to support a Quad City-area patient who has received the HeartMate Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD).  This is the first time GMC Cardiac Rehabilitation has had the opportunity to work with a patient who has received such a device.  (Posted 1/29/04) 

Local Cardiologist Publishes Manuscripts
Dr. Nicolas Shammas was the principal investigator and first author on two recently published manuscripts.  "Evaluation of Platelet Activation, Fibrinolysis, and Hemostatic Activation During High Dose Dobutamine Stress Echocardiography" was published in the International Journal of Angiology; and "Clinical and Angiographic Predictors of Restenosis Following Renal Artery Stenting" was published in the Journal of Invasive Cardiology.  (Posted 1/29/04)
