Amiodarone:
Be Careful When Doing The Right Thing
by Blair W. Foreman,
M.D.
Antiarrhythmic therapy for the treatment of atrial and ventricular
ectopy and sustained arrhythmias was historically the domain of all
physicians. Family practitioners, internists, cardiologists,
and electrophysiologists all routinely participated in the
prescribing and dispensing of these agents. However, the
Cardiac Arrhythmia Suppression Trials (CAST) in the early 1990's
demonstrated that Class IC drugs were potentially harmful when used
in the wrong patient population. Today more is known about
antiarrhythmic medications. The antiarrhythmic drug Amiodarone
HCL, has had an increase in sales and prescribing in the recent
years. This increase usage demands selective physician
prescribing and prudent patient follow-up. (Posted 2/17/04)
