Dr. Shammas
Publishes Paper in the Journal of Invasive Cardiology
(Posted 1/15/06)
Dr. Nicolas Shammas has published "Eptifibatide in
Peripheral Vascular Interventions: Results of the Integrilin
Reduces Inflammation in Peripheral Vascular Interventions (INFLAME)
Trial" in the Journal of Invasive Cardiology,
2006:18:6-12. This trial was a randomized, prospective study
that evaluated the vascular inflammatory responses to angioplasty in
the lower extremities and tested the hypothesis that integrilin, a
2b/3a inhibitor, reduces these responses. Although integrilin
did not appear to influence these markers of inflammation, it was
clear that inflammation does occur post intervention and follows a
predictable pathway. A commentary by Dr. John Young, from the
Ohio Heart and Vascular Center and the Lindner Center for Research
and Education at the Christ Hospital, Cincinnati, Ohio, on the
INFLAME trial stated that "this study raises interesting and
important questions about the similarities and potentially important
differences across vascular beds."
Co-authors with Dr. Nicolas W. Shammas were Eric Dippel, MD, Jon
Lemke, PhD, Jon Robken, MD, H. Lester Kirchner, MD (from Case
Western Reserve University), Vickie Takes, RTR, Matthew Kapalis, BS,
and Theresa Palabrica, MD (Millennium Company).
