Facts
Genesis Heart Institute is more than a building. The Institute is a regional network of heart specialists dedicated to advancing heart care delivery to residents of eastern Iowa and western Illinois.
Some 30 physicians practicing in both Iowa and Illinois, as well
as several hospitals, are members of the Institute.
- Heart Institute specialists perform procedures at a number of hospitals within the region. These specialists perform more procedures at Genesis Medical Center than anywhere in the Quad Cities. Last year specialists performed:
- 764 cardiovascular
operations, and in the last five years, 3,022
cardiovascular operations and 1,537 heart
surgeries have been done at Genesis Medical
Center, Davenport.
- 48,934 non-invasive
heart tests done at Genesis Medical Center, including the
Illini Campus
- 10,189 Cardiac Cath Lab
procedures done in the past year
- almost 8,000 coronary
cath lab procedures done last year
- 54,658 Cardiac Rehab
visits done in the past year at Genesis Medical Center,
including Illini
- 27,265 Cardiac Nursing
Care Days - our cardiac nurses counsel heart patients to
live healthier lives, including things like stopping
smoking, and appropriate use of medications
- CABG death rate is better than
the national average (actual death rate compared to expected
death rate when accounting for risks patients had prior to
surgery)
- Death rate following a heart
attack is much better than the national average.
- Door to Dilation average time
is 61 minutes by NRMI, while the national average is 91
minutes.
- Specialists also perform
diagnostic testing at Genesis Medical Center, DeWitt Campus,
and diagnostic testing and cardiac catheterizations at
Genesis Medical Center, Illini Campus, in Silvis, IL.
- More than a dozen Institute specialists are presently conducting
clinical trials for drug therapy, electrophysiology and interventional cardiology. Research has been conducted through Genesis Medical Center since 1990, with a formal department formed in 1997. Since that time heart specialists have expanded their focus in order to bring advances in procedures, drugs and medical devices to area residents.
- Institute specialists hold outreach clinics in a number of locations, including
Galesburg, Geneseo, DeWitt, Clinton, Muscatine, Durant and Maquoketa. The Institute is committed to expanding care to rural locations: encouraging specialists to expand locations for testing, diagnosis and follow up care.
- The Institute also sponsors continuing education for physicians, nurses and other health professionals. More than 30 programs are held each year. Larger events include a Peripheral Vascular Conference in June
and Cardiology at the Bix in July.
The Institute has grown out relationships formed through a heart program started more than
30 years ago at Genesis Medical Center's predecessor, St. Luke's Hospital. Genesis Medical Center was the area's first site for open-heart surgery, and heart specialists continue to perform first-in-the region and first-in-the nation procedures here.
